Lake Vyrnwy visitors urged to stick to signposted routes as storm clean-up continues
14th February 2025
Visitors to Lake Vyrnwy are being urged to keep to the signposted open routes and marked diversions on site as the extensive clean-up from Storm Darragh continues.
A huge number of trees were uprooted across the visitor site back in December causing them to fall, blocking many trails and a large section of the perimeter road.
Teams have been on site since the storm, working hard on the ground to clear the debris and remove the fallen trees.
With the school holidays approaching, more people are expected to pay a visit to Lake Vyrnwy, take in the spectacular scenery and have an enjoyable time with the walking routes on off. But visitors are being asked to take note of the routes that are accessible as the clean-up progresses.
Griff Watkins, Lake Vyrnwy Visitor Site Manager said: “We are still busy cleaning up after Storm Darragh had a massive impact on the site and it is going to take many months to get everything put back to normal.
“With the February half term holiday approaching, we want to urge everyone to please pay attention to which routes and parts of the site are open and which are not accessible right now.
“The perimeter road around the reservoir is still closed for a large section and Rhiwargor car park remains closed but there is still plenty to see and do. We have worked hard to open trails when it is safe and created a new diversion route to access Rhiwargor waterfall we also want to remind everyone that the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel, Artisan’s café, Chocolate Cabin and the toilets remain open.
“We want to thank everyone for their patience while our work is ongoing, and updates can be found on our website along with further information on which trails, and car parks are either open or closed.”
Storm Darragh hit Lake Vyrnwy early in December last year when the wind speeds across the site caused significant damage with many trees uprooting and falling, blocking many of the trails and a large section of the perimeter road.
As well as the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel, Artisan’s café, Chocolate Cabin and the toilets being open, the main car park and trails near to the village are open and accessible.
Considered Wales’ most beautiful lake, water company Hafren Dyfrdwy manages the area around it.
