Water pipe responsibility
When it comes to your water pipes, it’s important to understand who’s responsible for fixing and replacing your water pipes. Especially in the event that something goes wrong. Use this page to filter the facts from the fiction.
Your responsibility
By law, the owner of the property is responsible for maintaining any private pipes that are supplying their water. This includes pipes running both inside and outside of the property.
It is vitally important that leakage is reduced to acceptable levels in order to protect the environment and reduce energy costs. Because of this, if you receive a letter from us advising you of a leak, we can offer our domestic customers (subject to conditions) a free of charge repair.
Please note that many leaks can be repaired using your household insurance. You should first check whether your household insurance covers you for repairs to your water pipes. Leaks covered by household insurance will not be included in this Scheme and we may ask to see your Insurance Policy before proceeding with the Scheme.
For more information check out our repairing leaks leaflet (PDF).
Our responsibility
We are responsible for our mains pipes and assets which are normally located in the road or footpath. Our responsibility for the water supply is up to and including our asset, the controlling external stop tap, which is normally located at the boundary of your property although this isn’t always the case.
